De Tenebris Model United Nations: An Introduction

By Ada Duru Ak

In an era where global challenges are increasingly complex, the need for informed and engaged youth is more critical than ever. With Model United Nations conferences usually serving students in private schools or in upper socioeconomic circles, many youth are unable to take action and be involved due to financial problems. The inception of DTMUN was born out of a desire to create a platform where aspiring diplomats and global citizens who were not able to travel or pay hefty fees for Model United Nations could come together to discuss pressing issues, develop their skills, and foster a sense of community. My mission with De Tenebris Model United Nations was clear: to provide a space for students to engage in meaningful dialogue about today’s most significant challenges while promoting inclusivity, sustainability, and lifelong learning.

My name is Ada Duru Ak and I am the founder of De Tenebris MUN. I am a rising senior doing the International Baccalaureate program here in Turkey and I have been involved in various youth work regarding policy and international relations so far. My biggest passions include global affairs, diplomacy, and the world order. These passions led me to start De Tenebris. Literally translating to “of darkness” or “out of darkness,” I aimed to find my lux–the candles, lightbulbs, and gas lamps–all around the world with DTMUN. In all shapes and forms, I am beyond grateful to have met so many motivated young individuals with a common objective: making the future a better place.

De Tenebris Model United Nations is, at its core, a Model UN organization. With educational simulations that immerse participants in the world of diplomacy and international relations, our mission is to cultivate a generation of leaders who are not only knowledgeable about global issues but also equipped with the skills to address them. We envision a world where young people are empowered to take action, advocate for change, and contribute positively to their communities and beyond. For this reason, we haven’t only been providing with MUN experiences to our members; rather, we have also been incorporating other important elements like trainings, panel discussions, and social events.

At DTMUN, we strive to create an environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. Our vision is to connect students from all corners of the world, allowing them to share their perspectives and experiences. We believe that diversity is our strength, and by embracing it, we can foster a richer dialogue that leads to more effective solutions.

Since our inception, DTMUN has made significant strides in achieving our goals. In just a couple of events conducted since 2022, we reached an impressive amount of 2.5 thousand applicants from 82 countries on 6 continents (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania), showcasing the global interest in our initiative. This outreach demonstrates our commitment to inclusivity and our ability to connect with young leaders worldwide.

Of course, we didn’t just gather all these applicants for nothing! We gathered them all for impact, so we do have a couple of achievements. Here is a brief look into the key ones.

 1. International Engagement: DTMUN’s biggest success is that we successfully organize conferences that allow participants from various time zones to engage seamlessly. The challenges of coordinating an international event should be met with innovative solutions, ensuring that every delegate feels included and valued without any discrimination based on nationality.

2. Quality Academic Experience: Our committees produced high-quality outcomes, reflecting our dedication to academic excellence. We provide comprehensive study guides and resources that equip participants with the knowledge needed to engage in informed discussions.

3. Diversity and Inclusivity: We actively promoted an environment of equality, diversity, and inclusivity. By prioritizing representation, we ensured that voices from different backgrounds were heard, enriching the overall experience for all participants. While many non-profits are tempted to include their close friends and circle within their executive team, I highly advise you to do the exact opposite. Find motivated people from different schools, cities, or even countries!

4. Social Impact: DTMUN is not just about diplomacy; it is also about making a difference. We implemented various social projects that allowed participants to engage with their communities, fostering a sense of responsibility and social awareness. The mission of DTMUN is, after all, bringing international relations to everyone and making MUN accessible.

5. Networking Opportunities: Our conferences facilitated networking among participants, creating connections that extend beyond the event itself. These relationships are invaluable as they often lead to collaborations and partnerships that can drive positive change.

Tips for Young Entrepreneurs

As a young entrepreneur, the journey to creating a global impact can be daunting yet incredibly rewarding. It is a process that can be quite overwhelming, it can even get topsy-turvy at times. Nevertheless, here are some insights based on my experiences with DTMUN that can guide aspiring leaders:

1. Identify Your Passion

Understanding what drives you is crucial. Your passion will fuel your commitment and resilience when faced with challenges. Whether it’s international relations, environmental sustainability, or social justice, find what resonates with you and build your initiative around it.

2. Embrace Diversity

Diversity is a powerful asset. Surround yourself with individuals from different backgrounds and perspectives. This diversity will not only enhance your understanding of global issues but also foster creativity and innovation within your team.

3. Build a Strong Network

Networking is essential for any entrepreneur. Attend events, engage with like-minded individuals, and leverage social media to connect with potential collaborators and mentors. The relationships you build can open doors and create opportunities you never imagined.

4. Stay Informed

The world is constantly changing, and staying informed about global issues is vital. Read extensively, engage in discussions, and participate in forums related to your field. This knowledge will empower you to make informed decisions and contribute meaningfully to conversations.

5. Be Adaptable

Flexibility is key in today’s fast-paced world. Be prepared to pivot your approach as needed and embrace new ideas. The ability to adapt will help you navigate challenges and seize opportunities as they arise.

6. Focus on Impact

Always keep your end goal in mind: making a positive impact. Measure your success not just by numbers, but by the difference you make in the lives of others. This focus will guide your decisions and inspire your team.

7. Take Action

Ideas are important, but action is what brings them to life. Don’t be afraid to start small. Every significant change begins with a single step. If we were afraid of the UNHCR challenge, we would’ve never been able to boast about how we had a United Nations speaker at our conference! As you progress, you will learn and grow, refining your approach along the way.

The journey of De Tenebris Model United Nations has been an exhilarating experience filled with learning, growth, and connection. As we continue to expand our reach and impact, I am excited to see how the next generation of leaders will shape the future of diplomacy and global engagement.

To all young entrepreneurs out there, remember that you have the power to make a difference. Embrace your passion, build connections, and take action. The world is waiting for your unique contributions, and together, we can create a brighter future for all.
